What it is
Sublimation is the method behind all-over prints and photo mugs — designs that feel like part of the item rather than something applied to it. The trick is chemistry: the ink skips the liquid stage and turns straight from solid to gas, embedding into the material itself.
How it works
The design is printed in reverse onto special sublimation paper. That paper is laid on the item and run through a heat press at around 400°F. Under heat and pressure the solid dye vaporizes and permeates the surface — bonding into the polymer fibers of polyester fabric or the polymer coating on a mug, coaster, or panel. As it cools, the dye locks in. Because the color is now part of the material, there’s nothing on top to peel, crack, or feel.
Pros, cons, and best for
The strengths: unlimited full color, photographic gradients, edge-to-edge “all-over” coverage, and a completely soft hand with no durability weak point. The hard limits: it only works on polyester or specially coated items, and only on white or light bases, because the dye is translucent and can’t print white or cover dark fabric. Best for performance apparel, coated mugs, and full-coverage designs.
Versus other methods
On cotton or dark garments, you need screen printing or DTG instead. Sublimation is unmatched for all-over polyester prints and photo-quality coverage on items like neoprene koozies.

Any item made for sublimation carries a polymer coating or is poly-based. Cotton, untreated metal, and dark surfaces are not compatible.
